A woman who was hit while in a crosswalk in Kenmore Friday morning has died.

Police say the driver later called 911 and was arrested.

King County Sheriff’s Sergeant Cindi West said witnesses say the woman was thrown several feet when a SUV hit her near the corner of NE 160th and Juanita Drive Northeast. The driver paused for a moment and then took off.

“Get out of your vehicle. If you think you hit someone, get out of your vehicle, take a look, and if someone’s been hit, you need to render aid or call 911 and get them aid,” said West.

The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center where she died of severe injuries.

The driver, a 53-year-old Kirkland man, later called 911 saying he might have hit something.

When deputies saw the damage on his SUV, they realized he was the suspect they were looking for. He was arrested for investigation of felony hit and run.

“You have a duty and obligation to stay at a scene when you’re involved in an accident. You can’t go home and call later,” said West.
