A fatal fire in a Lynnwood apartment complex displaced 20 people late Sunday night.

South County Fire deemed it a 2-alarm fire, requiring more than 70 firefighters to battle the flames at The Martin at Meadowdale apartment complex in the 16000 block of 44th Avenue W.

A 34-year-old woman died from smoke inhalation, while the only other occupant in the same unit, a man in his 30s, was taken to Swedish Hospital in Mill Creek for smoke inhalation.

“We are sad to report firefighters found a woman dead while responding to an apartment fire in Lynnwood late last night,” South County Fire stated on social media.

In total, the fire impacted eight units, displacing 20 people, including 10 children. No other injuries were reported.

The Everett, Mukilteo, and Bothell fire departments assisted South County Fire. Tulalip Bay Fire and North County Fire provided backup for South County Fire.

“Icy conditions on the roof made their work challenging,” South Cunty Fire wrote.

The building sustained extensive damage, forcing residents to relocate temporarily. South County Fire revealed the Red Cross and other local organizations are helping them.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. Currently, fire officials believe the fire may have started outside the building.

“We encourage everyone: please check your home’s smoke alarms,” South County Fire stated. “Replaceable batteries in smoke alarms should be changed once each year. Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.”
