Seattle Mayor-Elect Katie Wilson is offering the clearest picture yet of what she plans to take on immediately after she’s sworn into office — from homelessness and housing to policing, affordability, and “Trump-proofing” Seattle.

Wilson laid out broad strokes of her early agenda during a CNN appearance Tuesday night, answering national questions about her politics, priorities, and personal life as she prepares to lead one of the country’s largest cities.

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson appears on CNN

Speaking with anchor Erin Burnett, Wilson opened the interview by addressing what it means to her to be a socialist mayor-elect. But most of the conversation centered on what she intends to do first at City Hall.

“I’ll say while I don’t shy away from the label, I certainly didn’t run on it either,” Wilson said. “And I think we’re really in a moment now where people care a lot less about labels than they do about results.”

Wilson has said her day-one priority will be launching an aggressive strategy to address homelessness, with a particular focus on the downtown corridor — an effort she said is urgent with the World Cup coming to Seattle next year. She said her plan will include expanding shelter and housing options to move people off the streets.

“We also have a severe homelessness crisis here in Seattle, and people are really looking for meaningful solutions,” Wilson told CNN. “We have rates of unsheltered homelessness higher than just about anywhere in the country.”

Affordable housing, childcare, and food costs will also sit at the top of her agenda, Wilson said, adding that Seattle has an affordability problem across the board — from housing to food to childcare.

Wilson points to childcare funding criticism as appealing to voters

The interview also touched on a topic personal to Wilson that has drawn conservative criticism in recent weeks — the monthly checks Wilson’s parents send her to help pay for childcare. Wilson told Burnett that being open about that support ultimately helped her politically because it underscored the financial pressures facing families in Seattle.

“I think that a lot of people of my generation and younger and older found it very relatable that during this stressful campaign, you know, my parents chipped in to help to pay for the cost of their granddaughter’s daycare,” Wilson said. “I think, you know, families help each other out, and I certainly acknowledge that I’m lucky to be in a position where my parents were able to do that. Not all families have that privilege.”

Wilson also reiterated her campaign pledge to “Trump-proof” Seattle by strengthening sanctuary city protections and preparing for potential federal conflicts should national policies shift after the 2024 election.

“We don’t need federal troops. We don’t need the National Guard in our city,” Wilson responded. “We can address our own problems and make sure that we are united within Seattle.”

On public safety, Wilson said she plans to overhaul how the city responds to emergencies, including expanding civilian roles such as traffic control and certain report-taking duties now handled by sworn officers. She has also called for broader police accountability.

One unresolved question is whether she will retain Police Chief Shon Barnes or bring in her own pick; Wilson said details on her cabinet are coming soon.

Transportation is another early focus. Wilson said she wants to build more sidewalks, improve pedestrian and bike safety, expand bus service, and push programs that encourage transit use to ease congestion.

NY Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani backs Wilson

Finally, the interview addressed comparisons between Wilson and New York City Mayor-Elect Zoran Mamdani after CNN aired clips showing striking similarities in their campaign messaging. Wilson said she’d never heard of Mamdani when she launched her campaign in February, but acknowledged the two share similar priorities around housing, affordability, and taxing wealthy corporations.

“It’s funny, because when I decided to run in this race, which was in February of this year, I had never heard of Zoran Mamdani,” she said. “I think that there are some similar conditions playing out here in Seattle to New York. You know, obviously the affordability crisis being a big one. There are some very similar dynamics. And I’m really excited to have a coast-to-coast partnership on driving for this vision of an affordable city.”

Since she gave that answer, the two Mayors-Elect have exchanged messages on social media. Mamdani congratulated Wilson, and Wilson replied, “Thanks, Zohran. I’m proud to be in the fight with you for a democracy on the terms of working people: affordability, housing, safety, and more. From NYC to Seattle: this is your city.”

Wilson said she soon will release more specifics on her first executive actions and the makeup of her new administration.

As Seattle prepares for its first mayoral transition in four years, residents are beginning to get a clearer sense of who Wilson will be as a leader and which battles she plans to take on first.
