Democratic incumbent Kim Schrier is ahead of Republican Spencer Meline in initial election results for Washington’s 8th Congressional District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Schrier received 57.5% of votes counted, while Meline received about 42.3%, according to initial returns reported Tuesday.
Schrier, a Sammamish resident and former Issaquah pediatrician, is seeking a fifth term. Meline is a small-business owner and restaurateur from Cashmere.
Both candidates campaigned on affordability
Schrier and Meline emphasized the cost of living but offered different approaches. Schrier focused on health care affordability and energy investments, while Meline called for reducing federal spending, cutting regulations, and increasing domestic fuel production, FOX 13 reported in October.
Schrier highlighted rising insurance premiums as a concern for the people she represents.
“Right now people are drowning. They’re getting hit with higher and higher insurance premiums, if they can get insurance at all,” Schrier told FOX 13.
Meline’s platform also proposed preventing institutional investors from buying single-family starter homes. In a Facebook video following the primary, he described affordability as a central purpose of his campaign.
“It’s been about believing we can make life more affordable for working families,” Meline said, according to FOX 13.
Candidates entered election with different fundraising totals
Schrier reported approximately $3.7 million in campaign contributions, compared with about $72,334 for Meline, according to campaign finance figures reported by The Everett Herald on Election Day.
The district includes Chelan and Kittitas counties, portions of King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, and a small portion of Douglas County, according to The Wenatchee World.
