NCTC Director Joe Kent: U.S. must stay vigilant against Al-Qaeda threats

The U.S. National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) is putting the country on notice regarding potential attacks and infiltration by the pan-Islamist terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.

According to a memo released by the NCTC, Al-Qaeda is “likely seeking to leverage their media publications and global conflicts, particularly where there is U.S. support or military involvement, to inspire potential attackers.”

The memo warns local law enforcement agencies of potential threats to large gatherings, including concerts and sporting events, and advises government officials to avoid surveillance and refrain from publicly sharing travel plans or schedules.

“The relentless pursuit of our enemies means clearly defining and understanding them,” NCTC Director Joe Kent stated. “Constant vigilance includes guarding our borders and ensuring our communities are informed. We have the knowledge and leadership to keep America safe. That said, it is critical for first responders and the public to stay alert and vigilant against threats from Al-Qa‘ida’s global network. While a number of threats persist, NCTC and our partners are monitoring 24/7 to thwart these attacks and keep Americans safe.”

Kent and the NCTC  praised President Donald Trump’s policies amid the threats, claiming America is more prepared than ever to respond to and address any threat directly, rapidly, and with strategic coordination.

The NCTC revealed in a Sept. 19 announcement that it had removed one Al-Qaeda terrorist based in the U.S. The suspect entered the country under an asylum claim during the previous administration. The NCTC discovered the suspect had ties to Al Qaeda and detained him.

“Many of the suggested target themes in recent al-Qa‘ida threats are consistent with the group’s post 9/11 attack plots in the homeland,” the memo stated. “Since al-Qa‘ida’s propaganda and media often revisit these themes, they may indicate potential targets that authorities, first responders, and public safety officials should closely monitor.”

PNW native Joe Kent appointed as NCTC director

Kent, a veteran and two-time Republican candidate for Congress, was appointed as the director of the NCTC in July after Trump nominated him for the position. Washington Democratic Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell opposed Kent’s confirmation, with Murray calling Kent “patently unqualified,” according to The Washington State Standard.

Kent is an Oregon native who grew up in Portland. He lost two elections to be the representative of the 3rd Congressional District in southwest Washington in 2022 and 2024 to Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.
