‘The work ahead is as critical as ever’: Dow Constantine bids farewell in State of the County address

King County Executive Dow Constantine delivered his final State of the County address Wednesday afternoon, announcing his early departure from the role after being nominated as the next CEO of Sound Transit.
Speaking to a packed auditorium on Capitol Hill, Constantine reflected on his tenure and the county’s future.
“To the people of King County, because of you, the state of King County is strong, resilient, and brimming with possibilities,” he said.
In his half-hour speech, Constantine highlighted his accomplishments, acknowledged ongoing challenges, and outlined priorities for the county—including climate change, homelessness, drug abuse, gun violence, transit, and looming budget issues.

One of the biggest obstacles, he said, comes from “the other Washington.”
“Do not succumb to the cynicism and threats issued from the other Washington. We have the industry, the intellect, the character, the values to stand strong and chart our own course,” Constantine said.
With 16 years as county executive and more than three decades in public service, Constantine called the role the honor of his career—though not without difficulties.
“We faced enormous challenges in the early days of my administration. Not only the profound impacts of the Great Recession, but a structural financial gap and growing demand for services that continues to outpace our resources,” he said.
Constantine steered the county through both prosperous and turbulent times, and he expressed confidence in the foundation he leaves behind.
“The work ahead is as critical as ever. It is rewarding for me to know the next chapter will unfold on a solid foundation that we have built. And I will be there to help or stay out of your way as needed. Finally, to the people of King County, thank you. Your trust, engagement, and commitments to building a stronger, more just community and a better future have made everything possible,” he said.
