Consumers Supply Distributing, LLC of Sioux City, Iowa is recalling certain dog biscuit products after testing found they may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The voluntary recall covers four-pound bags of Country Vet Biscuits, Original Meaty Flavor, Heartland Harvest Dog Biscuits, and Meaty Flavor with Chicken, both with lot code 40906513 and a best-by date of September 6, 2026.
Salmonella can cause illness in animals that consume contaminated products and poses a risk to humans who handle the food, particularly if they do not wash their hands after contact, the FDA said.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever. In rare cases, the infection can lead to more serious complications. People who develop symptoms after handling the recalled products are advised to contact a healthcare provider.
Pets infected with Salmonella may show signs such as lethargy, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some animals may carry the bacteria without appearing ill, but can still spread it to other animals or humans. Pet owners whose animals show symptoms after consuming the products should contact a veterinarian.
The recalled biscuits were sold at retail stores in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Montana, and Nebraska.
The FDA said no illnesses have been reported in connection with the products.
The recall was initiated after routine FDA sampling detected the bacteria in finished products. Consumers Supply Distributing has halted production and distribution of the affected lot while the company and the FDA investigate the source of the contamination.
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled products and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Questions can be directed to the company at (712) 202-5609, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. central time.
