Meta’s fourth-quarter results jumped past Wall Street’s expectations thanks to solid advertising revenue, sending shares higher in after-hours trading Wednesday.

The company earned $22.77 billion, or $8.88 per share, in the October-December quarter. That’s up 9% from $20.84 billion, or $8.02 per share, in the same period a year earlier.

Revenue grew 24% to $59.89 billion from $48.39 billion.

Analysts, on average, were expecting earnings of $8.21 per share on revenue of $58.5 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

Meta’s expenses, which the company already warned will be significantly higher this year, grew 40% to $35.15 billion.

For the current quarter, Meta is forecasting revenue in the range of $53.5 billion to $56.5 billion. That’s above analysts’ forecast of $51.4 billion. For 2026, Meta is forecasting expenses in the range of $162 billion to $169 billion, driven by infrastructure costs and employee compensation.

Meta had 78,865 employees at the end of the year, an increase of 6% from a year earlier.

Shares of the Menlo Park, California-based company rose $27.28, or 4.1%, to $696.01 in after-hours trading.

Why Canada? America’s northern neighbor seems an unlikely target for a trade war

WASHINGTON (AP) — Canada might seem an unlikely target for a U.S. trade war. No country on Earth buys as much from the United States as its northern neighbor. For American farmers, Canada is second only to Mexico as an export market. A North American trade pact — negotiated by President Donald Trump in his […]

As DOJ went after protesters for felony assault, juries and judges were unconvinced

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department failed to secure felony convictions against most of the 102 protesters arrested in four major cities last year on charges of assaulting federal authorities — a record far below the norm in federal assault prosecutions. All of the dozen cases that made it to trial, mostly in […]

READSTOWN, Wis. (AP) — The way Derrick Van Orden sees it, any Republicans in the U.S. House who distance themselves from President Donald Trump in this year’s midterm election aren’t just being foolish, they’re being disloyal. That’s why Van Orden, a two-term incumbent from western Wisconsin fighting to keep his seat in November in a […]

Saudi Arabia has few options as it faces mounting threats from Iran and its allies

A lightning advance by Houthi rebels threatens a crucial Red Sea shipping route. Drone attacks blamed on Iraqi militias have forced the closure of a major pipeline, and Iran is still disrupting the Strait of Hormuz. It’s a nightmare scenario for Saudi Arabia, and it has sent jitters through global markets. The Saudis’ most essential […]
