Sunsets at 9 p.m. finally arrived earlier this week to kick off the hottest and sunniest weather seen throughout the Puget Sound this year.

The first 9 p.m. sunset arrived June 2, and they will last until July 17—giving Washingtonians 46 total days with 9 p.m. sunsets.

The late sunsets have paired themselves with a surge in summer weather. While May had just seven days of high temperatures reaching 70 degrees or more (and just one 80+ degree day), June is expected to have more than double with 17 70+ degree days, according to AccuWeather.

Currently, Seattle is experiencing a 16-day streak of 70-degree days or higher, which is expected to end by June 17.

Daylight length peaks this month between June 18-23, where nearly 16 hours of “daylight” is expected, according to Time and Date.

Where to catch a late sunset

For those seeking the best views, Richmond Beach Saltwater Park in Shoreline, Seahurst Park in Burien, and Seattle’s Carkeek Park are among the most famous spots to enjoy the region’s dramatic sunsets. Other parks with strong viewing areas include Sunset Hill Park, 32nd Avenue West Boat Launch, Jefferson Park, and the Betty Bowen Viewpoint (near Kerry Park).

Discovery Park was ranked the most breathtaking location for watching the sun fall into the horizon in Seattle, according to travel website Holidify. Others listed were Sunset Hill Park, Kerry Park, Gas Works Park, Alki Beach, and Golden Gardens.

Seattle has new rules for its parks, which include shortened summer hours at some of Seattle’s most popular beaches. These parks were previously open until 11:30 p.m., but will now close at 10:30 p.m.
