An Air Quality Alert was issued Wednesday for several cities in central and northeastern Washington due to wildfire smoke sweeping through the area.

The alert encompasses 33 cities within Chelan, Douglas, Ferry, Grant, and Okanogan Counties and will remain active until further notice, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced.

Air quality may reach unhealthy levels in downwind areas due to current and forecast smoke from regional wildfires, such as the Spokane Area Fires.

NOAA advised residents in the area to check air monitors before participating in outdoor activities.

“When air quality is Unhealthy, everyone should reduce exposure. Limit time outside, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and follow tips for cleaner indoor air,” NOAA stated.

The highest Air Quality Index levels in Washington are in Winthrop (170), Twisp (163), and Entiat (161), all of which are registered in the 151-200 range for unhealthy air quality.

A complete list of all 33 cities impacted by the Air Quality Alert is available here.
