Do you support Pediatric Neurosurgeon Ben Carson?
May 10, 2012, 2:10 PM
He’s been the subject of a TV movie staring an Oscar winner, he brought himself to the highest levels of his profession from a background of poverty, he is internationally hailed as ground breaking in his skills as a neurosurgeon, yet when he was asked to be a commencement speaker at Emory University, a handful of faculty mobilized HUNDREDS from the Emory “community” (faculty, students, graduates, etc) to sign a letter warning that Dr. Carson did not believe in materialist evolution! Why, he even believes that materialism can lead to problems in ethics!
Keep in mind that Dr. Carson was not going to speak on evolution– but no matter– this coalition of conformity seeks to lecture the world’s greatest pediatric brain surgeon that “science rests squarely on evolution” and are concerned that people hearing him might think he is someone who “understands science.”
David Klinghoffer has the story here (as well as links to the letter and additional coverage) he also has a column on it at Redstate.
The Discovery Institute has put up a petition to support Dr. Carson AND others who might experience academic intimidation. You can sign it here.
