Dori: We can’t have a generation of people waiting around for family to die

Jun 8, 2016, 1:55 PM

Dori has been haunted by recent numbers that indicates more millennials are living at home with their parents than any other recorded generation — nearly 33 percent of 18-34-year-olds. Then, a study released Tuesday by a financial website that says Washington state is the worst state in the country to be a millennial, based on factors such as unemployment rates, rental rates, nightlife and access to broadband.

The news reminded him of the calls he recently took on the show from area millennials, such as Justin, who is still living with his parents and has ominous plans for breaking free.

“I figure there are three ways to get out of the hustle,” Justin told Dori. “One of three ways is to gamble and get lucky. One of the other ways is to get an inheritance — that would be nice. Other than that, all that is left is to rob, cheat or steal. There’s really no opportunity for people in our generation.”

This sparked an idea: Dori will put together a series over the next few months by gathering the great business minds and leaders who will explain to millennials how to achieve excellence and rely on yourself.

“We can’t have a generation of people waiting around for people to die,” Dori said. “That’s not a great strategy in life. And, plus, your parents hate hearing that.”

Dori says politicians are responsible for this problem.

“We’ve created a demographic that has come to believe that everybody else is responsible for their success,” he said. “Government: raise the minimum wage — not it’s up to me to make my job skills so unique and attractive that an employer is willing to pay a premium for that. Their attitude is the government just has to force the employer to give me $15 an hour, government has to take somebody else’s money so I can get free college. That’s no way to go through life.”

Dori started his quest by playing a song by Micah Tyler, a Pastor at the Watermark Church in Texas, who made a video about the delusional millennial demographic.
