Dori: I’ll always remember the time Seattle Weekly profiled me

I was sad to see the news that the Seattle Weekly is going to cease publication of their print edition and become online only. We saw that happen to the P.I., and it just hasn’t been the same.

A few years ago, one of the Seattle Weekly reporters said they wanted to do a profile on me. Management here advised me not to do it. They said it would be a hit piece that criticized my politics.

I did the piece anyway. The journalist, Ellis E. Conklin, was a really good reporter and a really nice guy. We ended up talking for hours and hours as he researched this profile.

It turned out that the story, which was called “A Tempest of Outrage” and went on the cover, was not a hit piece at all. It was the most extensive lifetime biography that anyone has ever done of me, going back as far as my childhood. It was also one of the few times I’ve been covered kindly. I was surprised because I think as a publication, Seattle Weekly was very different from me ideologically.

It’s always very sad to see a newspaper go, and the end of Seattle Weekly‘s print paper is a loss for Seattle.
