Here’s something the media needs to hear. And this gives me hope because this is true diversity. We’ve talked a lot on the Todd Herman Show about pretend diversity, skin level diversity, and true diversity.

Related: Let’s talk about populist promises

I’ve said that there is not a great deal of difference between an Asian American who went to an elite school and a white person that does the same thing. The core is the same, intellectually.

Fake and true diversity

Fake diversity has run wild in America. But out of Silicon Valley comes an engineer who is a diversity advocate. He wants to take engineers and executives out of Silicon Valley for a full year and send them to places like Detroit and into the rust belt. This engineer, Leslie Miley, wants to mix cultures and take great ideas from Silicon Valley to the rest of America. Miley is talking about real diversity.

This is an immersion therapy that is going to reap rewards on both sides; the engineers and the communities.

I wish our news organizations would do the same thing, take reporters out to live and mix within the heartland. Or have people who actually live there, reporting from the center of the country.

As always, please listen to the full audio clip for complete context.
