Applauding Trump’s choice of Gorsuch for Supreme Court

Neil Gorsuch, the president’s judicial nominee for the Supreme Court, is brought to you by the people who voted for Donald Trump. It’s their victory and I want them to feel as happy as they should feel.

Neil Gorsuch is a great choice. His appointment won’t change the balance of the courts. But the Democrats say that they are going to filibuster anyone who is chosen.

National Review wrote that Gorsuch’s judicial philosophy is similar to Justice Scalia’s.

Gorsuch has said:

Judges should instead strive, if humanly and, so, imperfectly, to apply the law as it is, focusing backward, not forward, and looking at text, structure and history to decide to what a reasonable reader at the time of the event in question would have understood the law to be. And not the side cases based on their own moral convictions or the policy consequences that they believe might serve society best.

I think the president is enormously proud of his choice and of this man. This is one of those moments when Conservatives should be filled with glee that Trump is there in office.

The Kabuki theater against Gorsuch is about to begin. It will be outrage theater and Democrats will pretend to be astounded by Trump’s pick. But none of it will be true. Instead of saying things like “I disagree with Gorsuch philosophies, but he’s a fine man” they will rake him over the coals.

But Gorsuch is an originalist. And originalism is not a political philosophy, it’s a common sense philosophy.
