Nation’s priciest home takes 43% haircut

The nation’s most expensive home closed last week at a 43 percent discount, but how do you draw accurate comparable sales on a $150 million home?

Candy Spelling, widow of the late television producer Aaron Spelling, reportedly had been trying to sell her 56,000 square foot, 123-room Los Angeles mansion for three years, holding firm on her $150 million asking price.

However, the number of buyers willing to pay that number apparently dipped with the economy. Petra Ecclestone, 22, whose father is the British billionaire and Formula One racing boss Bernie Ecclestone, paid $85 million for Los Angeles County’s largest home on 4.6 acres.

Known as “The Manor,” the mansion has 14 bedrooms, 27 bathrooms, and 16 carports and additional parking for 100 cars. There’s a double staircase inspired by “Gone With the Wind.”

Agents reportedly could not decide on an exact count of rooms. Among the spaces are a bowling alley, wine cellar and tasting room, a humidity-controlled silver storage room, China room, gift-wrapping rooms, library, gym, media room and one of Aaron Spelling’s enduring entertaining favorites: The screening room, where the projection screen emerges from the floor at the same time windows are automatically shaded.

The servants’ quarters alone feature a large kitchen, 7 bedrooms, 5 fireplaces and 4 wet bars.
