Need some sun? Fred Couples’ desert home hits market

Fred Couples plans to move about a nine-iron from where he’s living now.

The popular Seattle golfer recently put his Palm Springs-area home on the market for $4,195,000 – fully furnished – and is building a new one in La Quinta’s exclusive Madison Club development.

Couples, an O’Dea High School graduate, grew up on Beacon Hill and developed his game at Jefferson Park, a landmark public course. He attended the University of Houston where one of his roommates was future CBS television broadcaster Jim Nantz.

Couples purchased his present home for $3,074,500 in 2009 and has used it as a respite from the PGA tour. The Spanish-style villa was built in 2008 and is situated behind a private courtyard across from the golf course. The 4-bedroom, 4.5-bath home has 5,173 square feet of living space on nearly half an acre. The home has hardwood floors, carved stone detailing and custom cabinetry in the updated kitchen. Other amenities include two master bedrooms – one upstairs, one downstairs – an outdoor kitchen, pool and spa.

Couples debuted on the PGA Tour in 1980 and won his first of 14 tour events in 1983. He captured the 1992 Masters’ Tournament and began playing on the Champions Tour in 2010.
