Say goodbye to Capitol Hill’s rundown post office building

The former Capitol Hill post office building is not long for this world.

A Land Use Permit was issued to allow for the demolition of the building at 101 Broadway East, to make way for a six-story, multi-use building. The permit was issued March 3.

The building, which will occupy the 7,200-square-foot lot, will house 44 residential units above retail space. It replaces the old post office building that was built in 1951.

For those wondering what happened to the post office, it didn’t move far. The United States Postal Service opened in its new location at 212 Broadway East. It found it’s home in the former Office Max Business Solutions center.

The new addition to Capitol Hill is located across from the light rail station. It is just south of Dick’s Drive-In.

Crews have roughly 18 months to begin demolition after the city issues a use permit. The exact date of when demolition will begin isn’t known, according to Wendy Shark with the City of Seattle.
