Why we should support Obama on Syria

President Obama has spoken, and he says that he has not made a decision yet on going in to Syria. But he says if we do, it’s not going to be a boots-on-the-ground war.

I’ve seen that the American people are staunchly against us acting in Syria. But I feel about this like I felt about some of the things that we did when George W. Bush was president. I actually still believe in the notion that America is morally superior to most other nations on Earth. And I do believe that, as one of the most powerful nations on Earth, it’s essential that we protect the defenseless. And I do think that it’s crazy, for moral reasons, to stand idly by while a madman gasses his own people.

I also believe that it would be insane to let that madman continue, unpunished, to develop weapons of mass destruction. I said the same thing when George W. Bush was president, I’ll say the same thing when Barack Obama is our president.

I’m sure there are a lot of principled people who are just flat against war and are against war now, even with a Democrat as the President of the United States. But there are so many hypocrites who base their love or hatred of U.S. intervention based on whether it’s Bush or Obama who’s president.

What I find amazing is all the people who had blind faith in Barack Obama, who said, he will never go it alone like Bush; he’ll build a coalition, he’ll make the world love us; everybody will join hands and take on these evils together. But he’s looking to be more of a unilateralist than Bush was. He can’t even get Britain on board.

And I’m okay with that. I think the president shouldn’t wait for the U.N., shouldn’t wait for other nations to give their assent, to say okay, pat us on the head, alright United States, you can go do that now. I think the president needs to act in the best interests of the United States of America.

Now, I will also tell you: Time Magazine Thursday called this Obama’s biggest flip-flop ever. Biden said he was going to move to impeach George W. Bush and Obama said the same thing. When he was Senator Obama, he said the President of the United States cannot strike another nation unless we are in imminent danger of that nation attacking us or our interests directly, unless he goes to Congress first.

Now that he’s President Obama, he’s not going to go to Congress. But I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this. I’m going to assume that he’s not a hypocrite; he’s just learned that sometimes you just have to go it alone, and sometimes you have a level of information and knowledge that is far beyond what any human being outside of that world can even fathom.
I’m not going to call him a flip-flopper.

I’m just going to say he’s been learning on the job.
