Will the Seahawks go after Peyton Manning?

Could the Seahawks be in the market for one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history?

The future of Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning is in question after a neck injury sidelined him for the entire 2011 season. Without Manning, the Colts had the worst record in the league (2-14) and subsequently fired their head coach and general manager.

Manning told an Indianapolis newspaper earlier this week that “it’s not a real good environment down there right now, to say the least,” a possible signal that his time in Indy is nearing an end. Some expect Manning to be released by the team, considering his hefty $28 million bonus is due by March 8.

With many quarterback questions of their own, could the Seahawks make a run for the future Hall of Famer this offseason?

“If Paul Allen says ‘I want a world championship, I want Peyton Manning at whatever the cost,’ then I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that that conversation is had,” 710 ESPN Seattle’s Brock Huard told the 97.3 KIRO FM’s Ron & Don Show on Wednesday.

The Colts are expected to select the best quarterback prospect in a generation — Stanford’s Andrew Luck — with the top overall pick in the upcoming draft, another sign that Peyton might be leaving town sooner rather than later.

Having two elite quarterbacks on the same roster is a luxury every NFL team would love to have, but wouldn’t make much sense in this particular situation. Manning wants to win another championship as he nears the end of his career, whereas Luck just wants the opportunity to start in the NFL.

“I honestly believe this, knowing Peyton the way I do, I don’t think there’s anyway in the world Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck will be on the same Indianapolis field. I don’t see that happening,” Huard said.

With the Mariners recent failure to acquire an up-and-coming superstar in Prince Fielder, why can’t the Seahawks make a splash to sign one of the most recognizable athletes in all of sports?

“Here’s the difference between the Seahawks and the Mariners: The Seahawks have an owner that if he really wants something, he typically gets it,” said Huard.
