Did the President of the United States just commit treason?

Jul 17, 2018, 12:01 PM

I try to stay away from presidential politics, but when I kept hearing the “T” word, I actually paused for a minute.

“Do I actually know what treason means?” Kind of, I guess. But not really in the context of a joint press conference in Helsinki with Vlad Putin.

So I put the treason clause into my Google machine and got this: U.S. Constitution, Article III, Section 3: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.”

I’m not a Constitutional lawyer, but I think I can follow along. Let’s take this step by step.

The U.S. Intelligence Apparatus last week indicted 12 Russian operatives for hacking into the DNC in the 2016 election.

The current National Security Advisor Jon Bolton said this hacking is an “act of war.” Let me directly quote him so there’s no grey area, Bolton said “Attempting to undermine America’s Constitution is far more than just a quotidian covert operation. It is in fact a casus belli, a true act of war, and one Washington will never tolerate.”

Only it was tolerated, in front of the world, in a joint press conference that ended with the exchange of a commemorative World Cup soccer ball from Russia with love.

So you have U.S. Intelligence backed by a thorough investigation and the National Security Advisor both saying the U.S. was attacked by Vladimir Putin. We can all agree to those facts?

Ok, good.

So after the press conference heard round the world the Democrats pounced, no surprise there. But what about the Red team? None other than the current Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said, “No question that Russia interfered in our election,” contradicting the president.

The question for everyone now, whether you voted for Trump or Hillary, is did that press conference give aid and comfort to Russia? Did the president adhere to our enemy?

I won’t try to make up your mind for you, but I will leave you with this thought: compare how our allies were treated last week with how our enemy was treated this week.

Peculiar, yes?
