Crowd packs heat; Oak Harbor backs down

It's been three weeks since an Oak Harbor city councilmember started a national controversy by trying to kick out a wounded Army veteran who was legally carrying a weapon during a council meeting.

Councilmember Rick Almberg then walked out.

The council was met by 160 people Tuesday night, many who were packing heat.

There were handguns in holsters and rifles slung over shoulders and an unknown number of people concealing their weapons as the Oak Harbor City Council met. Many attended the meeting to show support for veteran Lucas Yonkman who Councilmember Almberg tried to have kicked out of City Hall last month, including Joe Hawkins who openly mocked him. "Mr. Almberg I just want you to know that I have a concealed ham sandwich right here I don't want you to get up and walk away," he chuckled.

Most attended the meeting to oppose the city's ban on guns in parks and the marina. The Second Amendment Foundation had threatened to sue if the ordinance wasn't overturned.

Sandy Peterson spoke out against the ordinance. "If the city council members are intimidated by people exercising their Second Amendment rights to bear arms, perhaps they need to examine what it is about that that makes them uncomfortable," she said.

William Frail had an M-1 rifle on his shoulder as he testified. "Sir, my mother was Jew," he said. "My family went to the chambers. I will not go into the night quietly while these two ask me to board the train."

But not everyone spoke in favor of overturning the ban. Shane Hoffmire doesn't believe having guns in parks is a good idea. "While I support the Second Amendment and citizen rights to bear arms, I strongly believe guns do not belong in public spaces," he said.

Pam Fick also spoke out in support of the ban. "There are those here tonight who will argue that more guns in more hands and more places makes us safer," she said. "More guns in more hands and more places didn't make people safer. It just made people more dead."

Lucas Yonkman, the man at the center of this gun debate in Oak Harbor, also addressed the council.

"I come to you tonight with a heavy heart," Yonkman said. "I see a beautiful country divided and conflicted. I see a constitution being eroded, and the rights so many have fought and died for totally lost. I see men and woman who are elected leaders pushing personal agendas."

Yonkman believes the answer to mass shootings and community violence will be found in treating those with mental illness, instead of taking guns away.

The city council eventually voted to overturn the ban, which the interim city attorney had told the members was unconstitutional. The council did not call for the resignation of fellow member Almberg, which a few people had called for.

After the meeting, he said he hopes the city can move past this and get onto more important business.

    I am glad that the Oak Harbor City Council heeded their own council and overturned an unconstitutional policy. As for guns in public spaces, I practice concealed carry each and every day...in Oak Harbor, where I live. Many others do, too. Those law abiding citizens carrying all around us aren't the threat that many perceive them to be. They are actually an insurance policy against those who scorn the law and are in those self same public places - seeking opportunity to do others ill.

    I actually agree with a lawyer will wonders never cease. At least their attorney knows the law and saved the taxpayers the cost of the lawsuit. Making parks and the marina gun free was a very stupid idea.

    Those are laws, not part of the Constitution. By your rationale, any law limiting the rights of free speech near/in a school, on an airplane, or in a court room is okay, since the law says not to do that.     Laws are either accepted or rejected when judged against the Constitution. The argument put forth above is that ANY law restricting guns is Unconstitutional. If this were true than all children could pack guns to school and anybody could carry guns aboard an airplane. Okay, so you believe anybody can walk around a school with guns. Do you believe they can shoot them at will in schools? I guess so because you believe not being able to is Unconstitutional.

    Please review your threads above and adjust your logic. You are not making an Argument. You have a Syllogism where not all premises are true. You can't logically claim some gun laws are legal while also claiming that every gun law is illegal because it is Unconstitutional.

    You can't pick and choose which Constitutional right to support. The right to keep and bear arms should be protected as fiercely as the right to free speech. Both are rights "of the people", and both "shall not be infringed. The Supreme Court completely disagrees with you. (See US v Miller, 1939; Poe v Ulman, 1963; Roe v Wade, 1973; US v Verdugo-Urquidez, 1990; Heller v District of Columbia, 2008; McDonald v City of Chicago, 2010). The Founding Fathers disagree with you. (See Federalist Papers #29 and 46.) Kids DID pack gins to school as little as 10 years ago, especially in rural areas. Before schools were made gun-free (once again, sure wish Adam Lanza had gotten THAT memo!) there were rifle and pistol clubs across the nation--still are, outside of liberal meccas. I think responsible gun owners should be able to exercise their right to self-defense wherever they happen to be. If that's in a school when the next Adam Lanza comes storming in, then maybe we'll have one dead (the maniac trying to make a name for himself) instead of 26.

    No kids can't pack guns in schools, just like you have to be 21 to buy and consume booze. There are restrictions that are consistant with the constitution (thought there is no specific right to consume booze in the constitution, another difference) and ones that are not. As proposed, a broad restriction on bearing an arm in public spaces where we have a right to occupy is an unconstitutional restriction. It's clear your preference would be that no one can carry.

    Really, I am from the south and I have had many types of races as friends. I have to say that the most racists is blacks against different shades of black. If anything doesn't go their way they scream racism even if the guy they are yelling at is a tinge lighter than him...or darker. I lost my job because I wasn't dark enough.     You are one warped guy. The "gun issue" was "alive" when another Democrat was in the White House, only he was white (I am referencing President Clinton), when the gun ban came into being. It's not a white/black issue. Good/evil issue, yes. Evil is no respecter of skin color, neither is good. The gun issue has come because there is a Democrat in the president's office and Democrats have repeatedly desired to take guns away from law abiding citizens (regardless of the color of their skin, btw), claiming that to do so will eliminate gun violence, which is utter non-sense.

To this day he's never used it. I have the same right to protect myself and my family from the same evil. If it was legal I would conceal-carry in meetings and no one needs to know. And hopefully I would never need to use it either. Also, every time I see our military and there is a black soldier with an assault rifle I'll have satisfied your question. Only the military has actual "Assault Rifles" - The Ar-15's and the semi-auto AK look alikes are not found in military use. They are 'not' assault rifles but merely look like their big brothers, the fully automatic AK and the M4.

    Some of the first gun controls enacted in the United States were designed to prevent blacks and other minorities from being able to protect themselves from the klan. Seems the fellows in the white sheets didn't like it when people shot back at them. This "gun issue" has been going on for a long time. You might recall that certain guns and magazines were banned in 1994 when a white president was in office. Same can be said for the president in 1934 when automatic weapons were banned.

    Myself and others around me have "grown up" by being self reliant and prepared.
