Record high temperatures bring ‘Junuary’ to Washington state

Jan 26, 2015, 6:53 AM | Updated: 1:26 pm

Temperatures hit record highs Sunday in western Washington and more “Junuary” heat is expected for the rest of the week.

The National Weather Service says the 63-degree temperature at Sea-Tac Airport was five degrees higher than the old record of 58 set in 1986.

Other record highs were 59 at Bellingham, 60 at Hoquiam, 55 at Spokane and 54 at Pullman. Spokane broke the old record of 54 that was set in 1935.

According to KING 5 meteorologist Keisha Burns, the record high for Monday at Sea-Tac is 58, but the forecast for today is for a record-breaking 60 degrees.

The warmest January day on record is 64 degrees, set on January 20, 1981.

Forecasters say this kind of weather is more typical in mid-to-late April.

According to the NWS, although the snowpack in the mountains is not doing well, rainfall has been near to above normal. That could mean we will need several consecutive months of below normal rainfall before there are concerns about drought.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
