Steven Powell tells authorities he wants to remain silent

Feb 15, 2012, 5:55 PM | Updated: 7:00 pm

As Josh Powell’s family members make plans for laying his body to rest, one family member is doing all he can to remain silent.

Steven Powell, Josh’s father, remains in custody, and authorities are interested in knowing whether he has information about Susan Powell’s fate.

On Tuesday, he filed a written notice in Pierce County Superior Court asserting his constitutional right to remain silent and not discuss any matters with Utah, Washington or federal law enforcement.

Prosecutors in Pierce County have said they would listen to any information that Steven Powell has about the disappearance of his daughter-in-law, but have not offered him any kind of plea deal.

Steven Powell was arrested after a search of his home where father and son, along with Josh’s two sons, Braden and Charlie were living, turned up child pornography. Steve Powell was charged with 14 counts of voyeurism involving two children and one count of Possession of Depictions of Minors Engaged in Sexually Explicit Conduct in the Second Degree. He plead not guilty on all charges.

When Steven Powell was informed of the deadly blast that killed his son and two grandchildren, he was put on suicide watch, according to Pierce County spokesman Detective Ed Troyer.

“Steve Powell didn’t seem very upset by the news, but was angry towards authorities who notified him,” Troyer said.
