Seattle City Light seeks rate hike

Aug 14, 2012, 7:48 AM | Updated: 9:50 am

Seattle City Light customers could soon see a big rate increase, as the utility goes before the city council Tuesday to state its case for higher fees.

City Light is proposing a 4.4 percent rate increase in 2013 and a 5.6 percent rate increase in 2014, Publicola reports.

As part of a new strategic plan, the utility is seeking to even out rates for all users, commercial and residential.

Publicola says that means residential rates will go up 6.8 percent in 2013. In contrast, the largest commercial energy users will actually see their rates go down by 4.1 percent.

The council’s energy committee will take up the issue at its 2 p.m. meeting, and is expected to approve the rate hikes and send them to the full council for approval in September following the annual summer recess.
