A stubborn fire burned for much of the morning at a former elementary school in SeaTac.

The two-alarm fire at what used to be Maywood Elementary School on South 200th Street near 14th Avenue South was reported at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. The school has been closed for years.

As of 6:30 a.m., firefighters continued to battle the flames.

Firefighters were fighting part of the fire from the inside, but because of safety concerns, crews got out of the building and continued fighting the fire from the outside, according to Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority.

The building was built in 1958. Fire officials said there is foam insulation in the ceiling that is melting and starting more fires.

That insulation is causing some toxic smoke. Evacuations are not necessary for those who live in the neighborhood, but people should avoid the area near the fire.

Firefighters said the flames began in the northwest corner of the building. Crews have been working to keep the fire from spreading to other parts of the school, such as the gym.

No injuries have been reported.
