Police report details initial fight that led to controversy at Todd Beamer

Oct 28, 2016, 6:39 AM

A police report obtained by “The Dori Monson Show” details the incident at Federal Way’s Todd Beamer high School that sparked controversy.

On Oct. 18, Federal Way police officers were on campus investigating reports of a student with a weapon when they were asked to respond to an unrelated student fight in the lunch room.

The students were separated and one was taken to the school office. But the other girl, according to the report, was marching through the halls to the office with a “determined, direct stare.” Other students were lingering behind to see the outcome. The police report states it appeared as if another fight was about to happen. Two school officials tried to stop the girl from going to the office, but the girl pushed them aside. The officials stayed with her but she continued.

That’s when two officers got involved but the girl was undeterred. At one point the officer “tried to control her but she resisted and pulled away more,” the report states. This caused both officers to fall to the ground. A crowd of students had gathered at that point and were reportedly yelling and hostile toward police.

The officers told the girl she was under arrest, but she resisted. She kicked at one officer, striking him in the thigh, chest, and stomach. The officer was also struck in the face, causing his glasses to break. Eventually, the girl was overpowered and put into handcuffs and led away from the school.

The police report states that the girl apologized for fighting with the officer once at the police station.

Since then, students have been criticized by their peers for not participating in a Black Lives Matter event that was held after the arrest.

One student who did not participate was a 14-year-old freshman who said she felt that the Black Lives Matter event at the school was misdirected. She did not want to participate in an event that was a result of an out-of-control student attacking a police officer. But some of her peers disagree. The freshman and students like her have been called racists ever since. She was confronted on Wednesday by about 50 students screaming threats at her. According to KIRO 7, a school security officers advised her mother to keep her away from school for a few days while things cool down.
