Anyone surprised Washington is nearly the worst state to drive in?

Jan 27, 2018, 10:21 PM

The data is in. Sorry, Washington, you’re about the worst state to drive in. In other obvious news, water is wet.

According to WalletHub, Washington state ranks 49th in the nation when it comes to driving conditions.

Follow Northwest traffic news

WalletHub calculated a series of factors in four primary categories: ownership and maintenance; traffic and infrastructure; safety; and vehicle maintenance costs. In each of those categories, respectively, the state ranked: 45; 39; 36; and 17. That averages out to a score of 44.08. To put that in perspective, Texas is the best state to drive in with a score of 63.68.

The only state worse than Washington was Hawaii.

The news that Washington is not the best state to drive in may cause some residents to pause … but just for a second before they move about their day. They won’t move very fast of course. Take the commute from Everett to Seattle (23 miles), which “reliably” takes 1.5 hours.

As the fifth worst drivers in the nation, Washingtonians are well aware of conditions on the road. There’s so much bad traffic, lawmakers want people to start working from home. Officials are telling us it will get worse before it can get better. And all it takes is one marine-related snafu on the Alaskan Way Viaduct to snarl traffic for hours.

Of course, some may disagree that driving around Washington is so terrible. Those people can just ask the Germans for comfort.

As WalletHub breaks the data down, it also ranks Washington as the following:

  • The 4th highest car theft rate in the country
  • The 4th highest average gas prices
