Around 40 dogs died in a house fire in Poulsbo Friday morning.

A neighbor saw flames coming from a house in the 1400 block of Northeast Paulson Road and called 911, according to a Facebook post by Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

Fire crews arrived and saw that the home was fully involved.

Law enforcement ran the plates on a vehicle outside the house to obtain the homeowner’s phone number. After being contacted, the homeowner arrived at the house.

The homeowner told officers he is a dog breeder.

Firefighters were able to rescue three dogs, but around 40 died. The three that were rescued were released to Kitsap Animal Control for further care.

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
