Classes did not go as planned Friday morning at Garfield High School. Teachers protesting staffing adjustments marched their students into the gym and engaged in a sit-in.

The protest ended in time for lunch. Classes will resume as scheduled.

According to the school district, the teachers’ actions violate the union’s “No strike” clause. It’s not clear what action district leaders may take.

Seattle Public Schools released this statement on the high school’s website:

Garfield teachers chose not to teach this morning and gathered students in the gym in protest of staffing adjustments. The teachers ended their ‘sit in’ prior to lunch and classes will resume after the student lunch. Certified central office staff are at the school to ensure student safety and learning. The teachers’ actions violate the SEA contract “no strike” clause.]
