The Alaskan Way Viaduct demolition is nearly complete, and there are before and after shots to prove it. All that remains are the last pieces in Pioneer Square.
On September 12 crews will begin removing one of the last remaining sections of viaduct over South Dearborn Street at First Avenue South, frequently used for those heading to and from SR 99 and points south and west of downtown. The intersection will be closed for 10 days from September 12, during which time Alaskan Way will have four lanes open. More information on associated bus route changes and traffic disruptions can be found at the WSDOT blog.
Viaduct demolition head: ‘This is one of the toughest jobs I’ve ever done’
In total, approximately 1.4 miles of roadway will have been removed, comprised of 400 columns, and 61,000 cubic yards of concrete, weighing 122,000 tons. The viaduct removal process was treated as a series of bridges, with each section removed individually while adjacent sections stood.
