Hottest June on record in the US, second hottest for Washington state

Jul 12, 2021, 8:40 AM

Last month was the hottest June on record in the United States, and the second hottest June on record for Washington.

Breakdown of records set during Washington’s heat wave

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the major heat waves from coast to coast, including in Washington state, helped push June 2021 to the top spot.

NOAA says the average temperature was 72.6 degrees F, which is more than 4 degrees above average, making it the hottest June in 127 years of record keeping. This June beat out June 2016 for the top spot by 0.9 of a degree.

The average June precipitation across the country was 2.93 inches, matching the historical average for the month. Some states, however, had extremes in rainfall, either too much or too little.

In the Seattle area, July 10, 2021, marked day 26 without measurable rain. It’s not forecasted to rain Monday, which would bring that number up to 28 days. If it reaches 30 days without measurable rain, the National Weather Service in Seattle said that would be the fifth longest stretch since 2000.

As far as July temperatures, NWS Seattle says there’s a “chance of simply being ‘average’ for mid July.”

Total of 78 likely heat-related deaths in Washington from recent heat wave
