After the rain early in the week, and with more to come, emergency managers across Western Washington are expecting an increase of landslides.

One slide closed all the westbound lanes of Highway 18 at Peasley Canyon Road and State Route 167 overnight into Wednesday morning, with one lane open as of 10:50 a.m. The on-ramps and a second lane were reopened Wednesday afternoon. As of Thursday morning, just one right lane is closed.

Crews are expecting to close the two right lanes later on Thursday to continue their work on debris removal and assist drainage.

Officials with the Washington State Department of Transportation says it’s a significant slide.

The City of Tacoma said a landslide had closed Marine View Drive from East 11th Street to Slayton Road. It was opened to all traffic as of 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Brendan McLuskey, director of King County Emergency Management, told KIRO 7 TV that the county has already seen a lot of slides this week.

“We’ve seen reports so far of 10 or 12 landslides throughout the county,” he said.

He’s urging homeowners to check for signs of potential landslide risk, including new cracks in plaster, tile, or your foundation. Other signs are widening cracks in sidewalks or tilting fences or trees.
