Update:

After a fire that destroyed an estimated $1,000,000 in property Sunday evening, Seattle Fire Department has concluded that the start of the fire was caused by an open flame igniting a mattress.

The fire was ruled to be accidental.

Original Story:

A three-alarm fire burned through a First Hill apartment building Sunday evening, leaving two in critical condition and 63 residents displaced.

First reported at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire on the 800 block of Madison St. ultimately summoned over 100 Seattle firefighters and 17 fire engines.

Several residents of the First Hill complex required evacuation. Crews successfully rescued one woman and her infant son from the fourth floor with a 35-ft. ladder.

Crews were forced to cut through the roof to gain access to the fire on the fourth floor. Upon extinguishing the fire just after 10 p.m., Seattle Fire condemned the two top levels of the complex, although the property manager will keep the entire complex empty until a safety inspection concludes.

A cause is unknown at this time and remains under investigation, according to the Seattle Fire Department.
