It’s Wednesday, let’s jump in the shower and have some thoughts.

Wait, that came out wrong. How about this: Here are my weekly Shower Thoughts.

Is the government open yet? I don’t know about you, but I feel really bad for the hundreds of thousands of men and women who will not get a paycheck this week. Regardless of your politics, forcing people to work and then not paying them is just wrong.

Speaking of just wrong, it’s just wrong that there will be no Seahawks game this weekend. Now that the season is over, it’s time to start thinking about baseball.

Rumor has it that Ichiro might make a comeback next year. I welcome it. The M’s will be lucky to win 40 games this year, and there are only so many bobblehead nights that you can do. Ichiro would at least put some butts in the seats.

In more serious news, imagine for a moment that every 43 hours, a third grader died in our area. How do you think people would respond? People would be freaking out and demanding answers.

Well, the new numbers on homeless deaths in 2018 are out, and it set a new record. 191 homeless people died last year in our area. That’s one every 43 hours. The news landed with a thud of complacency. We can do better with this crisis.

As we enter uncharted territory in the government shutdown, a silver lining has emerged with some National Parks. Volunteers have begun to pick up the garbage left behind at some of the most beautiful spots our country has to offer. Parks like Mt. Rainier and Yosemite are national treasures — good job to the people packing out their own trash.

So Jeff Bezos and his wife are divorcing. I feel bad for them; divorce is brutal. Washington is a community property state. If you do a strict 50/50 split, MacKenzie stands to get a divorce settlement of around $68.5 billion dollars. That’s billion with a B. Give or take a few hundred million.

Viadoom starts in two days. My elaborate plan is to leave earlier. How about you?

And finally, the first day of spring is in 70 days. So we got that going for us, which is nice.

That’s it for Shower Thoughts this week. See you next time.

JERUSALEM (AP) — A ceasefire agreement in Gaza has not stopped what a group of independent experts commissioned by the U.N. say is genocide carried out by Israel in the territory, the team said in a new report Monday. They also accused Israeli forces of crimes against humanity, including torture and rape, in the West […]

Thune makes final push in red states as he scrambles to save Republicans’ Senate majority

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Senate Majority Leader John Thune says he wouldn’t be offended if some Republicans didn’t want to campaign with him. He knows that he’s taken intense criticism from the party’s base — and from President Donald Trump — for his chamber’s inability to pass voter legislation this year. But Republican candidates […]

Thousands of observers are expected to descend on polling places to monitor the vote on Election Day

NEW YORK (AP) — Democrats and outside watchdogs are planning a massive presence at the polls on Election Day driven by concerns that President Donald Trump will further leverage the vast resources of the federal government to interfere with a midterm that could hobble his final two years in office. They won’t be the only […]

Trump failed to stop inflation. Now Republicans may pay the price in the midterm elections

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump would prefer that voters not worry about inflation. But it’s hard for them to ignore. Filling up a basic Ford F-150 truck now costs about $100, up $30 from a year ago. Mortgage rates have jumped to levels that have depressed home sales. And for the past 12 months, […]

In his own words: Trump on gas prices and energy costs since launching the war with Iran

Since launching the war with Iran nearly eight months ago, U.S. President Donald Trump has struggled to quell soaring energy costs, undermining Republicans’ attempt to keep control of Congress in the midterm elections next week. Low gas prices were a key campaign pledge during Trump’s second presidential run. But the energy crisis spawned by the […]
