Southbound I-5 in Conway has been reopened, following a multi-vehicle collision early Tuesday morning.
Washington State Patrol is reporting one fatality, and five other people with non-life threatening injuries. A box truck was fully engulfed in flames, and at least eight other vehicles were involved.
The collision occurred when the box truck hit a van, involving “several” other vehicles, and killing the driver of the van.
The ensuing backup extended almost five miles, as all lanes were closed for hours while WSP conducted its investigation into the incident. The early conclusions from that investigation were announced in a news release in the early afternoon on Tuesday.
The initial investigation shows that traffic was stopped or traveling a slow rate in this area just prior to the collision when a box truck failed to stop and collided with several vehicles; one driver died at the scene and several others were injured and transported to the hospital.
WSP detectives are examining all aspects that lead to this collision and are seeking additional witnesses that may have information surrounding this collision. If you know about this collision, you are asked to email or call Detective Sergeant Jason Kraus at (360) 870-4598 or jason.kraus@wsp.wa.gov or Detective Russ Haake at russ.haake@wsp.wa.gov or (425) 401-7717.
