Free college bill not fair for everyone

What about families like mine? 

Hey Dori, concerning Bernie Sanders’ and Pramila Jayapal’s college debt bill … they say the bill will pay off everyone’s outstanding student debt? My oldest daughter had numerous jobs during school to be able to graduate in four years with a B.S. in finance three years ago. She has sacrificed and saved to pay off her $30,000 debt, which she did a couple of months ago. Does she get a refund? I’m sure you can imagine what it took to save 30 grand in three years. My younger daughter just graduated last month with a business degree from Eastern Washington University. She took the six-year route, going to community college for her A.A. and then to the satellite campus for Eastern at Bellevue College. She worked two to three jobs for six years and lived at home most of the time, all to graduate debt-free. Does she get anything from Bernie or Pramila for working hard and not borrowing?

As a single mom, I paid what I could afford into the G.E.T. fund for nine years for both girls, and that covered about 30 percent. In our family, we worked hard for their education. What about those who just borrowed and are looking for a payoff? How can this be fair and equitable?

You don’t appreciate what you get for free

Dori, I am conflicted by the plans of the Democrats to make college “free.” I like the idea of making college more affordable for all people, but making it free will come with many unintended consequences. Just looking at high school dropout rates for public schools, for instance, will tell you that with no skin in the game, it is too easy to start and just not finish. It seems to me that tuition should not be eliminated, but reduced, to, say, $500 per quarter/semester. People, by nature, will push themselves more when they have something on the line versus getting it for free. Free sounds really good on the stump, but in practice, it fizzles.

You’re out of touch on student loans

I have been a fan since my son was 4 and I was a struggling college student, full-time employee, and single mother. My son is now 17, and I cannot believe how out of touch you have become on the subject of student loans. I’d like to know exactly how I was supposed to get out of poverty without an education that is not free? I even heard you say that not everyone needs to go to college. While I believe that, it should be a choice. For many, it’s either debt and education or poverty. You have become privileged and out of touch, and it’s a sad day.

Thoughts on the Democratic debate

I am a moderate conservative, raised in Minnesota, but have lived in many other states and moved to the PNW in 2014 when I started listening to you. I’m white, male, married, with three kids, lower to middle class, and worked my way through life like you. The basis of how I watched the debate is, which one of these people could I vote for instead of President Trump who would represent at least some of my middle conservative values? Is that too much to ask?

There are only two, and no, Gov. Inslee is not one of them. His ending remarks put the last nail in his coffin. Climate change (which is happening naturally) is neither the answer to all of our issues nor the end of all our lives. Blah, blah, blah … more taxes and building more windmills is not going to solve anything. Did you notice how there were not any serious questions about the $23 trillion national deficit? So I can say that the one guy who acted like a president for all of the people and not the just the far Left is Delaney, whom I had never heard of until tonight. The back up would be Ryan from Ohio. Forget the forerunners, they are all just on their knees pandering to the Progressives, and at the end of the day could never win a state that didn’t have oceanfront property.

Chick-fil-Nay

Hi Dori, on your show today regarding Chick-fil-A opening in Seattle, you mentioned that Seattleites dislike Chick-fil-A because they are Christian. I will not purchase or eat anything from them, not because they are Christian, but because they do not support the LGTBQ community; actually, their corporate giving goes to anti-LGTBQ groups. I thought that being Christian meant you were loving to all people. Isn’t that what Jesus stood for? If this definition is incorrect, would you please let me know what the correct definition is? I have absolutely nothing against Christians, but I am not too fond of people who are intolerant.

Justice for White Center rape survivor

Dori when it comes to the woman who was raped, I cannot explain how disgusted I am with the way Seattle and all of Washington state have become. If this was one of the politicians’ daughters, there would have been a lot more done about it. I think that she needs to file a lawsuit against Seattle and the state government for their policies and their neglect in allowing this to happen. They are a joke.
