WA Sen. Patty Murray: Trump 2020 budget ‘a nonstarter’

Washington Sen. Patty Murray spoke out Tuesday against President Trump’s proposed budget for 2020.

“The #TrumpBudget is a nonstarter,” she Tweeted. “I’m speaking now about how the substantial proposed cuts are yet another Republican attack on health care that would make it more expensive, out of reach, and lower quality for millions of families.”

The President’s $4.8 trillion budget includes sizable cuts to Medicaid, food stamps, affordable housing, and student loan assistance among others, while increasing spending for the military, border security, and his Space Force proposal. It also includes a 2 percent decrease in programs to fund education and environmental protection.

White House officials claim the plan will close the national deficit by 2035, a target that would require the U.S. economy to grow 3 percent every year through 2025 according to one estimate. The country’s economy grew 2.3 percent in 2019.

“President Trump likes to pick winners and losers,” said Sen. Murray. “In the #TrumpBudget, the few who are very, very wealthy and the biggest corporations win, and people who rely on Medicaid, CHIP & other support for their health care lose.”

Also speaking out against the budget was Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal, stating that it contains the “same broken promises.”

Fellow Washington Senator Maria Cantwell has not issued a comment on the proposed budget, nor have any of Washington state’s Congressional Republicans.
