Taste test: Seattle Schools students dig pizza, snub lentil Sloppy Joes

Oct 9, 2014, 6:47 PM | Updated: Oct 10, 2014, 5:37 am

The kids have spoken, and the discerning palates of a panel of Seattle School District students give a big thumbs up to pizza and chicken tenders, and a big thumbs down to lentil Sloppy Joes.

The district has just released the findings of a recent taste test of potential new menu items we told you about several weeks ago.

Not surprising, personal pan pizzas and breaded chicken tenders topped the list. Although healthier versions than previous offerings, both were still most popular, with 83 percent approval ratings.

What might be surprising is how many liked some of the more diverse and healthier offerings as the district tried out some potential new cafeteria menu items with about 150 students from John Hay Elementary and South Shore K-8.

Eighty-one percent said they liked General Tso’s chicken with fried rice, 61 percent approved of a chicken spring roll, and 54 percent liked the chicken tikka masala.

The district’s nutrition service department will consider the students’ feedback as it develops new school menus over the next year, seeking to continue developing healthier meals kids will actually eat.
