Construction closes SR 520 again for weekend work

Aug 8, 2014, 12:32 PM | Updated: 1:02 pm

In what’s become an all too frequent occurrence for Seattle-area drivers, the Washington Department of Transportation will close SR 520 for construction again this weekend.

The closure runs from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday between I-405 and Montlake.

Crews will be striping six new highway lanes recently repaved, while others pour concrete on the new West Connection Bridge. The huge structure will eventually connect the new SR 520 floating bridge with the existing SR 520 roadway.

“We’re trying to pool as much work together in the corridor as possible,” says WSDOT spokesman Ian Sterling about the latest weekend closure.

No additional weekend closures are scheduled as of now, but Sterling says there could be more as crews determine what needs to be done as the summer construction season winds down.

WSDOT will close both westbound lanes between 92nd Avenue Northeast and Montlake Boulevard between 11 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14 and 5 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, and again overnight on Monday Aug. 18.

The new SR 520 bridge is still scheduled to open in the Spring of 2016.
