Bus riders in Pierce County were bracing for massive service cuts earlier this year. Now they’re going to get increased service.

Pierce Transit gets 70 percent of its budget from sales tax revenue. That revenue had fallen off so much that the agency was proposing a 31 percent cut in service, but the sales tax revenue is bouncing back – so much so that those service cuts were canceled in July.

Now the
News Tribune reports
, the revenue forecasts have improved so much Pierce Transit plans to expand service by 3 percent next year.

The agency says it’s also taking advantage of major reductions in fuel costs to help pay for the expansion.

Pierce Transit plans to add service to Milton, Fife and Edgewood.

This expansion must be approved by the board before becoming official.
