Marijuana is selling like hot cakes in Spokane County. Actually, better than hot cakes.

Retail sales for legalized pot outsold many major products in Spokane County, including kitchen staples like bread and milk, according to The Seattle Times.

The Times cited numbers from the Washington Liquor and Cannabis Board and found that monthly marijuana sales topped $5 million in March, with the pace of sales on track to top receipts at area bookstores, museums, and live-music venues. The Times reported the average Spokane County household spends $225.64 on recreational marijuana, compared to $154.85 on wine, $155.37 on milk and $109.71 on bread in 2015. Beer remains king, with an average of $232.70 per household.

Despite the lofty averages, KIRO Radio’s Andrew Walsh and Ron Upshaw weren’t buying the kitchen-staple comparisons.

“I think it’s a little bit apples and oranges,” Upshaw said.

“Actually comparing apples and oranges is much easier because their both fruit, around the same size, they sell for about the same amount,” Walsh responded. “So when you’re just looking at that and comparing yearly receipts it makes a lot more sense.”

Walsh did his own research, finding that Americans spent $570 billion in cars in 2015.

“Whoa, Americans like cars more than bread!” he said. “Well, not really, cars are a lot more expensive than bread.”
