A two-mile stretch of the Cedar River remains closed this week to protect people who go boating or floating during the current stretch of hot weather.

The closure, which took effect Friday, is from Cedar Grover Road to Southeast Jones Road (River Mile 11.45 to River Mile 9.5). The closure is between the reaches known as Rainbow Bend and Belmondo between Maple Valley and Renton.

Several trees have fallen into the river in that area. In addition, construction is underway on a couple of flood-risk reduction projects that involve a lot of in-water work.

River closure signs are posted.

Sheriff John Urquhart is warning river users that the water is still cold this time of year and to watch for obstacles, such as rocks and branches.

“Our rivers in King County are cold, even in summer months, and river currents are powerful. Obstructions such as logs and rocks create natural hazards throughout our rivers. Always wear a life jacket and plan for a safe, sober journey,” said Sheriff Urquhart.

The stretch of river will remain closed indefinitely.
