Barricaded man fires several rounds at SWAT team, later found dead inside home near Bremerton

An armed man barricaded himself inside a home in unincorporated Bremerton on Monday and died from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies responded to the home in the 8400 block of NW Wildcat Lake Road, KCSO announced.

Deputies responded after a woman called 911, stating the man may have been under the influence of methamphetamine when he began assaulting her and staging weapons and ammunition around the home.

The man was also allegedly making comments about committing “suicide by cop” and engaging in a shootout with law enforcement.

The caller said that the 38-year-old Bremerton man had returned to the home the previous Saturday with her permission, even though she requested and received a court order of protection requiring him not to contact her.

The 40-year-old woman said she was able to flee from the home without any injuries.

The KCSO SWAT team responded to the scene after deputies obtained a search warrant to enter the residence.

Once law enforcement personnel attempted to contact the man, he fired several rounds toward officers, barely missing them.

SWAT team members returned fire while the suspect remained inside the residence.

Gunshots continued to be heard from inside the home as SWAT, KCSO deputies, Poulsbo and Bremerton Police Department officers, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife officers established a perimeter and evacuated nearby residents for safety.

KCSO noted that the suspect did not respond to a negotiator’s attempts to surrender peacefully.

A Pierce County Sheriff’s Office deputy also responded with a drone to assist, flying the drone into the residence. The suspect was located by the drone and was dead with a firearm in his hand.

KCSO notified the Washington State Office of Independent Investigations, as required under state law when law enforcement uses lethal force.
