A suspected drunk driver is in custody after crashing into a building in North Seattle and trying to run away from the scene.

It happened just after 1 p.m in the Northgate area. Seattle police say several witnesses called 911 to report a car crashed into the TJ Maxx building in the 11000 block of Roosevelt Way NE.

The 25-year-old driver apparently lost control of his 1973 Plymouth Scamp as he tried to make a left turn and crashed into the building. He and a female passenger took off on foot before police arrived.

They didn’t go far. The couple returned to the accident scene, where police arrested him for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Police say while there wasn’t much damage to the building, the suspect’s car was significantly damaged and had to be towed.

Neither he nor the woman were injured in the crash.
