UCLA prof is Wash. pot advisor

A UCLA professor who specializes in drug abuse and crime control policy will advise Washington on its new marijuana law.

The contract goes to Massachusetts-based Botec Analysis Corp., led by public policy professor Mark Kleiman. His company has evaluated government programs and consulted on drug abuse, crime and public health.

Botec will help state leaders develop rules for regulating and taxing legal marijuana in Washington.

An official announcement of the selection is expected Tuesday in Olympia. The AP got a copy of an e-mail sent to losing bidders.

Kleiman is the author of several books on crime and drug policy, including one that suggests a reduction in federal marijuana enforcement.
