Jury awards damages to King County over Brightwater delays

A lawsuit over construction delays at a huge sewage treatment plant ends in a $130 million jury award Thursday for King County.
The county sued a consortium of contractors known as VPFK over the failure of two tunneling machines at the Brightwater project. The contractors counter-sued.
The two boring machines were digging part of a 13-mile tunnel from the plant in south Snohomish County to a Puget Sound outfall at Point Wells. They broke down deep underground, delaying construction.
King County eventually hired a new contractor and finished the almost $2 billion project in November.
The jury award should benefit taxpayers but a project manager tells the Seattle Times in a statement that he expects the contractors to appeal.
