Madrona K-8 will be switching to remote learning through the end of the month, over a COVID outbreak that has nearly a quarter of the school’s students quarantined.

No Washington schools would reopen to all students under late-2020 threshold

The school closed its in-person facilities on Tuesday, Oct. 19, while staff prepared for remote learning and the Edmonds School District conducted a “deep cleaning of the entire building.”

Madrona K-8 reports 26 confirmed COVID-19 cases over the last 10 days, with 135 out of nearly 600 total students quarantined as direct close contacts.

According to a report from the Seattle Times, students will receive instruction over Zoom, with independent learning periods mixed in as well.

The school is tentatively scheduled to reopen on Nov. 1. Remote learning begins on Wednesday, Oct. 20.

Other schools across the region have similarly entered into temporary virtual learning periods over outbreaks since students returned to classrooms this fall. That included Eatonville High School in late September/early October, after reporting “several COVID-19 cases within the middle school.”

A vast majority of Washington schools have managed to remain fully open despite recent increases in COVID-19 cases driven by the delta variant. That said, small breakouts have been prevalent in several districts.
