After weeks of record snow, rain, and everything in between, the Puget Sound region will finally get a break this weekend, with dry, mild weather on the horizon.

Record-shattering rain drenches Western Washington

According to the National Weather Service, the region can expect a “pretty quiet weekend ahead,” with temperatures topping out in the high 40s, and no major weather events in the forecast.

If it feels like it’s been a long time since the Seattle area has been dry for that long … that’s because it has. Prior to this week, it had been 110 days since the city had seen three straight days without measurable precipitation. If rain stays away for long enough this weekend, that streak will finally come to an end.

This represents a welcome relief for Western Washington, following record-shattering rainfall in early January. At one point in Seattle, the city experienced its seventh wettest January day on record (2 inches of rain), while Hoquiam had its most rainfall it had ever seen in a single day in any month (5.78 inches).

Puget Sound region wraps up wild year of record weather

That had swathes of southwest Washington underwater, with flooding at the time fully blocking a 20-mile stretch of I-5 through Lewis County. That also coincided with heavy snowfall shutting down four main mountain passes, leaving Western Washington roadways cut off from their eastern counterparts for much of the last week.

Over the first two weeks of the month, Seattle has received just over 6.5 inches of rainfall. On average, the city gets roughly 5.8 inches of rain for the entire month of January.
