Two pedestrians fatally struck by suspected DUI driver on SR 9 in Arlington

Two people are dead after they were struck by a suspected DUI driver on State Route 9 in Arlington early Thursday.
The fatal collision was at the intersection of 204th Street Northeast and SR 9 in Arlington, Washington. Arlington police, North County Fire, and EMS responded to the scene at approximately 2:38 a.m.
“The officer started life-saving measures just trying to save the pedestrian that had been hit,” Sergeant Peter Barrett with Arlington PD told KIRO Newsradio. “Shortly after that, another Arlington officer, sergeant, arrived in the area and was trying to block the roadway and found a second pedestrian down that had been struck.”
The two adult pedestrians suffered life-threatening injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Arlington police had the driver of the involved vehicle, a 28-year-old Stanwood man, in custody and were processing him for suspicion of DUI. He was booked into the Snohomish County jail for investigation of two counts of vehicular homicide and investigation of one count DUI.
“Vehicular Homicide is a Class A felony punishable by confinement in a state correctional institution for a term of up to life imprisonment, or by a fine in an amount fixed by the court of fifty thousand dollars, or by both such confinement and fine,” states a release from the Arlington PD.
Both directions of SR 9 were closed Thursday until just before 1 p.m. while the investigation continued.
“Everyday commuters are going to be displaced from this route until it is opened up, and this is normally a pretty busy stretch of roadway for us,” Barrett said Thursday morning.
The public was asked to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
The Washington State Patrol and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office are assisting in the investigation.
